Meningitis Vaccination Requirement Q&A

The Hurtado Health Center will be closed from 5/16-early September for renovations. No students should be sent to Hurtado Health Center during this timeframe. For immunizations students should see the list of clinic dates.

1. Who is required to get the meningitis vaccination?
All first-year undergraduate and incoming transfer students who live in university housing are required to have the vaccination.

2. Do students have to have the shot before they can move in to housing?
YES. Students will not be allowed to pick up their room key on move-in day if they have not submitted proof of having received the vaccination.

3. Is there anywhere on campus where students can get the shot?
YES. Before move-in day there will be special meningitis immunization clinics on the New Brunswick Campuses for students who wish to get the shot on campus. Students can visit the Pathway to Enrollment for a schedule of dates and times. http://www.ugadmissions.rutgers.edu/status/login.asp

4. Is there a cost for this vaccination?
YES. If a student chooses to get the shot on campus there is a $88 charge that will be assessed by Student Accounting. The charge won’t show on the student’s term bill but will be posted to their account.

5. AGE REQUIREMENTS/PARENTAL CONSENT for meningitis clinics on campus:
Any student under the age of 18 must have a parental consent form to get the meningitis vaccination on campus. It is also recommended that the parent accompany the student when they get the shot.

6. Should students just wait until they get on campus to get the shot?
NO. Immunizations should be obtained and the necessary documentation should be submitted before students arrive on campus.

7. Where can students go to find out more information and get the necessary forms?

All immunization forms should be completed and returned by July 15, for students entering in the fall semester. Anyone entering the university after this date needs to send in the forms as soon a possible.

10. What about medical or religious exemptions to immunizations?
To be exempted on a religious basis, the student must submit a written statement explaining how the administration of immunization agents conflicts with his or her religious beliefs. To be exempted on medical grounds, the student must submit a written statement from a physician indicating that the immunization is medically inadvisable for a specific period of time and tell why based on a valid medical reason.

12. Are students on the Newark and Camden Campuses also required to get the vaccination?
YES. All undergraduate incoming and transfer students in Newark and Camden who wish to live in University housing are required to have the vaccination.
